When Vicki went to pick up Sam the following day, Seth offered her a Luger handgun for protection. She refused it. He explained that he’d gotten it in a private sale, which, although legal, meant there was no paperwork linking the firearm back to him.

“I’ve been thinking about giving you a thousand dollars so you can put an alarm system in your home.” Although she didn’t want to encourage him, the idea of a home security system was appealing. Vicki thanked Seth and said that she would feel better with an alarm.

“Someone called Heidi Boyack’s office and said Caradonna threatened me,” Vicki mentioned.

“Yeah, that was me,” Seth fessed up immediately. “He hangs out at a place called Brighton Billiards. He has two ‘muscle men’ that do things for him.”

Vicki went home and, knowing her memory would fail her, wrote out a memo to Boyack on her word processor. In it, she listed all of the things that Seth told her, but she seemed none the closer to any clarity about the situation.

I am very alarmed at this point. I don’t know if Seth is trying to set up Mary Jean, if Seth is being set up by Mary Jean or what. I do know that Seth is genuinely scared at this point. He is carrying around a weapon at all times . . .

If something happens to me, I want my estate solvent. I’m afraid of what will happen if I do so before then. If MJ has access to these people, so does Seth. For all I know, Seth may have asked MJ to arrange the things that have happened to me and is afraid, if she links the drug leak to him, she will tell on him. I do not know. I just know that Seth is very worried. I have never seen him like this.
